Dry-Mix Mortar Addition Level

Dose 0.5–2% — Below 0.5% there is not enough film to bridge cracks; above 2% the mix turns tacky and trowel drag rises sharply.

Pair with cellulose ether — Methyl cellulose and 2699 work on different mechanisms: one holds water, the other builds film strength. Together they extend open time.

Two-hour window — Strong alkali at high temperature cuts viscosity. Mixed mortar should be used within two hours; re-tempering with water breaks the film network.

Processing Guidelines

Make-down. Dissolve in 85–95 °C water under low-speed agitation and add flake slowly to avoid lumping. Typical solution strength is 6–10% for sizing and 3–6% for binders. Hold the tank at 60–70 °C to prevent gelation, and filter through 80 mesh before the size box.
Concentration. Work at the strength the application needs — adding water later to a gelled batch does not restore the film.
Filtration. Screen the solution before it reaches the machine; gel particles that pass are defects that cannot be removed downstream.
