Cold-Water Solubility & PVAc Protective Colloid

Room-temperature dispersion

No steam required for make-down: disperse in cold water, then bring to 70–80 °C only to finish. Shorter batches, less energy.

Protective colloid behaviour

Residual acetate groups give surface activity. Seed liquor at 4–6% produces even particle size and keeps reactor walls clean.

Viscosity window

20.5–24.5 mPa·s at 4% balances initial tack and cohesive strength — the general-purpose window for white glue and wood adhesive.

Processing Guidelines

Make-down. Disperse in room-temperature water first, then raise to 70–80 °C to finish dissolution. Typical solution strength is 5–10%. Always add flake into water, never water onto flake, and filter through 60–80 mesh. Strong alkali will cut viscosity — keep pH below 9 unless the formula calls for it.
Concentration. Work at the strength the application needs — adding water later to a gelled batch does not restore the film.
Filtration. Screen the solution before it reaches the machine; gel particles that pass are defects that cannot be removed downstream.
